Obituary for Doreen Isobelle "Val" Gould (Vaillant)

Sadly, we have lost our mother. Some of you may know her as Val as many people shortened her maiden name of Vaillant, while others referred to her given name, Doreen. But we know her as Mom.

Mom was born in Virden Manitoba and spent her early adult years in Thunder Bay Ontario where she met her loving husband Jack Vincent Gould. Mom and Dad moved to British Columbia in 1966 with four children and settled in the suburb of Glenayre in a house that they made a special home.

Mom was many things, not the least of which a clever and creative cook. Her meals, canning and Christmas baking were something to look forward and savor. She also worked for a number of years at the Hudson’s Bay where she made a number of new and long lasting friendships, and also found some good deals.

Mom was a consummate bridge player. In her early years she hosted serious bridge days where the ladies enjoyed the challenges of the game along with plates of Mom’s fancy treats elegantly served on her silver birch china. In later years Mom enjoyed the online version of the game and played with people all over the world.

One of her hidden talents was art. While she didn’t have time to dabble in such pursuits in her younger years, by her sixties her eye for colour and form was uncovered. She painted flowers, landscapes and even did some portraits of her family. One of her most treasured portraits was of her grandson Julian.

Mom passed away in her sleep on June 29, 2016, eight years to the day after her husband.

Rest in Peace Doreen Gould, you will be missed by your children Brydon (nee Larry Joseph), Darlene Valerie and Glenn John. You will reunited with your husband Jack Vincent and son Ross Douglas.
