Obituary for Ken Dearden

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Kenneth Dearden (Ken) at the Eagle Ridge Hospital on Sunday, September 1, 2019. Dad passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years Rubina (Ruby), eldest son Bruce, brother Alec and sister Irene. Dad is survived by son’s Don (Mary), and Greg (Suann), grandchildren Rochelle, Matthew, Tyler, Kara, Nick and Ryan, as well as many wonderful and loving nieces and nephews.

Dad was born and raised in New Westminster. After graduating from high school, he started working in a New Westminster firm, providing general insurance, accounting, and land registry searches and registrations. In 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) where he earned his wings. After his discharge from RCAF in 1945, he continued flying for some years. He returned to the same firm in New West, where he became a Notary Public, receiving his commission in 1962. Dad was very active in both the business community in New Westminster and Coquitlam and was involved in Coquitlam minor league baseball for over 20 years. Dad retired in 1989 and set off with Mom to explore Canada and enjoy cruises to distant countries. He especially loved spending time at their cabin near Mount Baker with family and friends.

We will never forget, his humour and infectious laugh or his sense of duty, love of family, and all things hockey. He will be sadly missed by his family and all that knew him.

Please share your memories, stories, and pictures on his Book of Memories.

Memorial donations may be made to Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation at www.erhf.ca.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 2:00 pm; with reception to follow.
