Obituary for Blege Mastracci

Sadly, we grieve our mom, Blege Mastracci, who recently passed away leaving behind 3 children and their spouses, 4 grandchildren and their spouses, and 4 great grandchildren.

Mom lived a long full life, emigrating from her native Italy with her husband and young children to make a better life for them in Ontario and then later, courageously moving to British Columbia after the death of our father. Strength and resilience were Mom’s dominant attributes.

For Blege, sometimes called Giggina, Gigi or Blegina, family was immensely important, and she thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with her immediate and extended family, eating, laughing, chatting and dancing up a storm during many basement parties. Not only was she much loved as Mamma but also as, Nonna, Bisnonna, Suocera, Zia, Commara, Sorella, Cognata, Cugina and Amica. She was a homemaker and a caretaker at heart, some may even have considered her their mamma adottiva. Although she had many titles, she shone the brightest when she was called Nonna.

Mom’s kitchen was her domain where she was boss. Her love and care for others was more often given through food and we would love to watch her work her love through cooking. She was proud of her role in the kitchen, had no recipes written down, but easily and expertly whipped up her mouth watering dishes from memory. Who doesn’t remember tasting her famous sponge cake!

Mom had a very cheerful disposition about her, always smiling or laughing and helping others to try to look at the bright side of things. Her heart and her home were open to all; she would always put others before herself. She had a way of touching the hearts of everyone she encountered. Although her later years threw some difficult challenges in her path, we take some comfort in knowing that Mom is now peacefully smiling down on us and in the loving company and care of those close family members gone before her.

Ciao Mamma, ti amiamo. Sarai sempre nei nostri cuori.

In lieu of flowers, let us all remember and bring forth our connection to Blege to honor her memory and keep her in our hearts for years to come. We invite you to share your stories and memories of Mom on the memory wall page so that we can cherish them together. A celebration of her love of life and her reunion with our father will be held in Ontario when all the people Mom so deeply loved and cherished can gather safely together.
