Obituary for Caterina Merlin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, mother-in-law, and nonna. Caterina passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital on the night of Sunday, November 6, 2022.

Caterina was born in Meduno, Italy, on August 21, 1934 and immigrated to Canada in 1964. Caterina will be remembered for her hard-working and generous spirit. Caterina's hard work began early in life, when she took a job in a factory in Switzerland. In Canada, Caterina worked first as a house keeper and eventually found a job at Good Host Coffee, where she worked for 30 years, and often put in many hours of overtime. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Above all, Caterina cherished her family, and was always happy when we were gathered around the dinner table.

Caterina enjoyed the simple things in life, whether it was tending to her vegetable garden, listening to and singing along with Italian music, hiking in Seymour Mountain, blueberry picking, and going to dances with her beloved husband, Toni. Caterina is survived by her daughter Lucia, son Giacomo ("Jack"), daughter-in-law Eiko, and grandchildren Ryan, Alissa, and Leo, as well as many relatives in Italy. She is predeceased by her husband, Toni, and son-in-law, Sergio.

Details regarding visitation and a celebration of life will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Caterina's honour to the Alzheimer's Society of BC.

We would like to thank all of the staff at Louis Brier Home and Hospital and Rachel (Caterina’s companion), for taking care of Caterina over the last six years.
