Obituary for Claude Gopaul

Claude Gopaul, Trinidad born Canadian Pharmacists, survived by two sons has passed away peacefully on Sept 11, 2020. Claude was married to Dr. Lena Hosein Gopaul and was a cherished member of the community since coming to Canada to attend UBC. He called Coquitlam home for over 60 years and lived and contributed to the community with an old
school approach, helping others however he could. Known to his friends as Magnus, Claude is remembered fondly and we are all saddened by his death.
Claude was well known at the Exhibition Park and in the Trinidad and Tobago community. Fond memories of Claude live on in everyone who knew him; he was always generous to his neighbors and friends and was loved by each of them. For years, Claude's love of gardening was the talk of the neighborhood and its abundance was shared with many neighbors and friends. Those who worked in his pharmacies continued to be his friends for years after those businesses closed, never losing touch, and staying good friends. His friends and family, from Canada to Trinidad, will remember a kind and well-spoken man who lived in service to others. Claude, Magnus, Gopaul, will be missed.

-September 2020
In 1928, Claude Gopaul entered the old World of Hardbargain in South Trinidad, West Indies where he met his wife to be, Lena Hosein, who preceded him to vancouver in 1955 where she graduated in Medicine, prior to interning in Pediatrics in 1962.

Claude arrived in Vancouver in 1956 and in 1962 they were married on campus, and soon after they became parents of two sons, Glen and Brian.

Following Claude's graduation in Pharmacy, in 1962, Lena and Claude opened their respective practices in the sanie building in coquitlam, B.C.

on October 8, 2012, Lena passed on after years of a very successful practice, and on September 11, 2020, Claude after retiring as a very successful and respected Pharmacist, he departed from the Royal Columbian Hospital to be re-united with his wife Lena of 60 years. Claude was 92.

Tarini Mahase

Uncle Claude was always such a kind and lively soul. He always believed in me and my future. I would look so forward to speaking with him over the phone and hearing his warmest of greetings.
Of all of the wonderful things I have heard about Uncle Claude, his infamous garden stands out the most to me. Although I have sadly never been able to bear witness to its splendor in person, the pictures painted so beautifully by family members remain etched in my mind.
Audrey Hepburn once said, “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” Uncle Claude, this quote completely embodies your love for this world and desire to leave it better. I can say with surety, that this world is much better for having you in it. Even though you aren’t here physically, your spirit is seen in every blooming flower and every beautiful aspect of nature. Now you are returned to heaven where you can attend to an even more beautiful garden. May your soul Rest In Peace.
