Obituary for Cyril Irwin Pomeroy

In loving memory of Cyril Pomeroy.

September 2nd, 1937 – June 19th, 2023

Cyril passed away peacefully on June 19th at the Belvedere Care Centre in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Thank you to the staff at Belvedere for their care and support in making his last months comfortable, and thank you to Melba Rosario for her home care and support over the last years of Cyril’s life.

Cyril was born on September 2nd, 1937, in Fort St. John, B.C. to Dorothy and Dan. After high school, he was accepted to the University of British Columbia and relocated to Vancouver. Cyril studied structural engineering in the Civil Engineering program and earned his degree in 1961. While at UBC, Cyril met nursing science student Carrol (Hunter) whom he would marry in 1962.

After graduation, Cyril worked for large consulting firms Swan Wooster and Peter Kiewet and Sons. This provided the opportunity for the newlyweds to travel and live temporarily in Ontario and Europe so that Cyril could work on local projects. After returning to Vancouver, Cyril started his own firm, Pomeroy Engineering, in 1965. With early success, he expanded the firm to include several engineering disciplines, as well as creating companies in construction and development.

Cyril and Carrol built a life in the Vancouver and Burnaby areas, and raised three sons: Bruce, Cam and Scott. As a family, they travelled across Canada and took many trips throughout B.C., often to visit siblings and cousins in the north. Cyril and Carrol travelled extensively and spent many vacations in Maui. They shared a love of golf, and they enjoyed several trips with the friends they made as members of the Vancouver Golf Club.

Cyril was predeceased by his wife Carrol, his daughter-in-law Deanna, and by his older brother Doug. Cyril is survived by his four siblings: Aletha, Ross, Pam and Cole. He leaves behind his sons and their families: Bruce (Francine), Cam, and Scott (Nicola), as well as his grandchildren Ava, Sophia, Cole, Kyle, Erin, Mara and Sinead.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to benefit Alzheimer’s research or your local Alzheimer Society.
