Obituary for Debby Giassi McDonald

Our beloved Debby passed away peacefully after a courageous three-year battle with Ovarian cancer. Debby is survived by her loving family: husband, John; daughters, Chiara and Cassia; mother Ederina; brother Brian (Jodie), nephews Alexander and Braedan; brother-in-law Jim, nieces Nicole and Heather, father-in-law Bill (Pops), Nana Mildred and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Debby was predeceased by her beloved papà, Aldo Giassi. In her life, Debby made friends so easily and she kept them all close. She will be dearly missed by Team Debby and everyone they represent. The Family would also like to extend special thanks to the medical staff at Royal Columbian Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, Crossroads Hospice and the Coquitlam Community Palliative team for their compassion and tremendous support of Debby throughout her journey. A private service for family only will take place on Friday, June 5. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Debby’s name to Ovarian Cancer Canada

I met Debby many years ago when she came to visit in the Okanagan. Debby was a lovely person with a spirited yet gentle demeanor. It was a blessing for me to have known someone as special as her. God Bless you all at this time.

My dear friend and colleague Debby will always be remembered as a truly honest, genuine, joyful and pleasant person. It was an honour knowing her and learning from her about strength and courage. I hope such loving memory of our Debby offers some comfort to the McDonald and Guassi families during these difficult times. In her last message to me, she said about the challenging time ahead for her and her family: “..... together we are strong, we can do this!” I pray for this strength now and forever!

Environmental Engineering program and BCIT are mourning the loss of our dear Debby. She was a great colleague but above all a shining star of our department, always kind, willing to help students and faculty and make sure all of us are happy. Sincere condolences to McDonald and Giassi families.
