Obituary for Hilda Elizabeth Backus (Booth)

Hilda passed away peacefully at the Belvedere Care Centre, Coquitlam, B.C., on December 17, 2020. She was predeceased by husband John Karle in 1954, husband John Backus in 2017, and brother Wilfred Booth (Helene) in 2007. Hilda is survived by siblings Beverly (Fred) and Mary- Lou. Left to cherish her memory are son Paul (Susan), daughters Karyn (Brian) and Mary (Bill); granddaughters Michelle (Robert, Xander and Rascie), Lisa (Michael and Everly); grandsons Glen (Courtney and Brooklyn) and Todd (Claire).

Hilda was a proud member of the Canadian Navy in WWII, serving as a Wren while stationed in Ottawa. After raising their family in Winnipeg, Hilda and John moved to Vancouver in 1981. They developed many lasting friendships within the Como Lake United Church over the next 35 years. Hilda was a dedicated member of the Arbutus Unit of Como Lake United Church Women’s group since 1984, where she held the positions of President and treasurer for a number of years. On March 25, 2007 Hilda was honoured with a U.C.W. Life Membership pin. In memory of John’s and Hilda’s contributions, name plaques will be placed on the memorial wall at Como Lake United Church.

The family would like to give special thanks to the caring staff at Residences at Belvedere and the Belvedere Care Centre in Coquitlam, B.C.

Cremation has already taken place at Burquitlam Funeral Home. A private family graveside service and internment will be held at a later date at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Winnipeg,Manitoba.
