Obituary for Jeanne Marie Louise "Joan" Buhl ( Lariviere)

JEANNE (“JOAN”) MARIE LOUISE BUHL (nee LARIVIERE)

August 23, 1921 – September 21, 2021

Born on the family farm near Carlton Saskatchewan, Joan passed away at the age of 100 in Burnaby, BC. Joan will be forever missed by her family: Yvonne (Clint), Diane (Bill), Jim, Carol, Bernadette (Claude), grand, great-grand, and great-great grandchildren, as well as by her large extended family and friends. Joan was predeceased by her husband Jim (1989), and all but one of her 12 siblings.

Our Mom was a remarkable woman who devoted herself to her family from the time she left high school to help care for her invalid mother.

Mom met our Dad when he was hired to work on the family farm. As a young woman she served in the Canadian Army during WWII, while Dad and several of her brothers served overseas. After her discharge, Mom moved to Vancouver and when the war was over, she moved to California to marry our Dad.

Our Mom worked full-time as a bookkeeper, while raising 5 children, first in California, and later in BC. Despite having to also care for a husband with a chronic illness, Mom was always ready to help others in need, and maintained her sense of humour and zest for life until the end. Mom’s Roman Catholic faith was a comfort to her throughout her life.

Mom would want to join us in thanking everyone who has been there to love her, laugh with her and support her throughout her long and rich life. Special thanks to the staff at George Derby Care Centre, where Mom lived for the last 5 years.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be scheduled once pandemic restrictions ease. Details of the service will be posted at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to your local Food Bank, or to the charity of your choice.
