John James Cairns (Jim), a man of hard work, honesty and integrity, passed away peacefully at the age of 83, surrounded by family on Friday, July 23, 2021. Jim is survived by Maureen, his wife of 61 years and daughters Tracy Johnson (Mario Carr) of Kelowna and Fiona Nelson (David) of Ottawa, and treasured grandchildren Alex, Isabelle and Ben. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Helen, and his brothers, William and David.

Jim was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK on May 10, 1938 and emigrated to Canada in 1960 with his loving wife Maureen. Jim was an avid and passionate gardener, a man who loved his home and cultivated great beauty with his extensive landscaping. He was a rugby and soccer player and track and field athlete in his youth and an avid lifelong sports fan. He spent many hours watching his favourite soccer team Newcastle United, and his beloved football team, the Seattle Seahawks. Jim was passionate about the things that he loved, he had a broad and extensive library of books and of classical music along with a detailed knowledge and appreciation of fine scotch whiskey. He was a vegetarian, a cat lover and a dedicated blood donor, donating blood 132 times during his life. He traveled to the U.S., Europe and Mexico and was especially fond of his time spent in Hawaii. Jim had a long and distinguished career as an Estimating Project Manager where he was known for his tremendous work ethic, attention to detail and precision.

He will be dearly missed by family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. We would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff of 5N at the Royal Columbian Hospital, in particular Annika and Kate along with Dr. Malhotra. Also special thanks to the care given by Jim's personal doctor and friend Dr. Bernie Toews. Rest in peace, Jim.

We will always love you.

Jim's funeral service will be held at All Saints Parish in Coquitlam (821 Fairfax Street) on Wednesday, August 25 at 10:00 am.
