Obituary for Joyce Robertson (Farmer)

The family regrets to announce the death of Joyce Robertson on October 23, 2013.

She was born on February 8, 1920 and spent her childhood in South Burnaby, graduating from Burnaby South in 1937, where she excelled in academics and track and field. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Virginia (Howat), and Edith (Rebus). Her husband, George Robertson, predeceased her in 2011, after they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Most of their married life was spent in North Burnaby, first on East Broadway, and the last 35 years on Dunnedin Street.

Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother – active, loving and capable. She was the family authority on questions of child-care, cooking, knitting, and algebra. Her working life started with bookkeeping in her husband’s business, Laurie Lumber, and she finished her career as owner/manager of Laburnum Cottage Rest Home in North Vancouver.

She is survived by her four children Jim, Barbara (Elmer Froese), Kathy (Bruno Mauro), and George, nicknamed Rob (Edie Leclerc). She will also be missed by 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Jean Clifford (Frank), and many nieces and nephews.

George and Joyce spent their retirement years helping family and assisting in the upbringing of their grandchildren, who all have many fond memories of their times together.

The last 16 months of Joyce’s life were spent at the Madison Care Centre in Coquitlam. We are grateful for the kind and compassionate care she enjoyed there, and also for the assistance and understanding of Dr. Douglas Moseley.

A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.
