Obituary for Karin Georgina Ellen Williams

Karin Georgina Ellen Williams (nee Pieplow, formerly Dale)

June 4, 1932 – May 7, 2022

Born in Toronto to loving parents Karl Hans Bruno Pieplow (Charlie) and Mary Rose Pieplow (nee Hooper). Karin was a sickly baby and wasn’t expected to live past childhood, but her life has been long and well-lived.

As a teen, Karin was offered a scholarship at the Art Gallery of Ontario; instead she completed a hairdressing diploma from Danforth Technical School. After four years working in a beauty salon she married and opened her own hairdressing shop in East York. Seven years later, she sold her business, and with her husband, Dennis Dale, bought a house in Scarborough, working from home while raising her children. During this time, she fostered eight children, which was a rewarding but painful experience when they left for new homes. She and her husband also bought a fifty acre farm east of Toronto, near the town of Campbellford, where the family spent many happy summers.

When Karin’s marriage ended, she moved and bought a house with a hairdressing shop in the village of Pefferlaw, Ontario. She was able to buy a camper van and took her family on vacations through Canada and the United States.

In 1979, Karin married Ian Williams, whom she had met a few years prior through friends. 35 guests were invited to their wedding but Karin was so well-known in the community that the church was filled to overflowing with well-wishers. Eager to accommodate Ian in his faith, Karin began attending her own United Church service on Sundays at 9am and then Ian’s Anglican service later in the morning. She said that either she was a very big sinner, or was working her way to Heaven.

In 1990, Karin and Ian sold their home to buy a 32 foot motorhome so that they could travel for long stretches. Their home base remained in Pefferlaw at the Eaglewood Campground cottage. They had many happy memories on the road, occasionally with her sister, Edytha, and cousins from England, Fred and Mable, as well as grandsons Joel and Lee. Sometimes their travels took them to Arizona to visit with their daughter Bonnie, grandchildren Kolya and Keturah, and family.

Karin and Ian’s life journey then took them to B.C., after Karin agreed that she would like to move west to take care of her new grandchild Brodie, when her daughter Dayna returned to work. One of Karin’s favourite songs was “Jesus Loves the Little Children”. Due to her love of children, over the years, Karin also helped support three children through World Vision.

Karin volunteered for decades with the Lions Clubs in Pefferlaw, Ontario and Coquitlam, B.C. She served in many capacities, including executive positions, and enjoyed organizing the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Coquitlam. She was also on the board of the Burquitlam Lions’ Care Centre and volunteered at the gift shop on a regular basis.

The church and serving God was a very important part of Karin’s life. Her spiritual journey began in the Gospel Hall Evangelical Church when she was six; in spite of the rigid teaching, she experienced love and guidance from its members that sustained her throughout her childhood. In adulthood, she joined the United Church where she taught Sunday School, a messenger Group, and chaired the World Day of Prayer for four years in a row. She continued to participate fully in many activities when she moved on to the Anglican Church; with the E.F.M group being a very big part of her spiritual journey.

Karin loved her gardens, taking purple irises from her childhood home with her each time she moved. She could often be found puttering in the garden at home or on the church grounds. Knitting was another hobby, and she contributed many items to support fundraising events. Many cabbage patch kids were properly clothed in her creations.

Karin will be remembered as a loving and caring, generous and supportive mother and grandmother, who had a great sense of humor. Her mission in life was to serve God through giving and compassion. She was one of our angels on earth.

Karin, sadly passed away at Nicola Lodge in Port Coquitlam on May 7th.

Karin was predeceased by her husband Rev. Ian Williams and her parents. She is survived by her older sister Edytha Terry; children Denise Dale, Dayna Dale Solem (Mike), David Dale; stepdaughters Bonnie Williams (Murray) and Heather Taylor (Randy); grandchildren, Lee, Brodie, Tara, Rachael, Kolya, Keturah, Jeff, Jay, and Joel; and was a proud great-grandmother to Aliana, Scotia, Maverick, Canyon, Christian, Coraline and Araya. Karin is fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Brian, Sandy, Andrea and Edwin.

Karin was thankful that God had blessed her with many wonderful, loving, friends in East York, Scarborough, Pefferlaw, and in the TriCities area, within Lionism, and in her church family. She especially wanted to thank her mentors, the reverends, Cathy, Anne, Trudi, and Grant with their caring, as they guided and strengthened her on her life’s journey with God.

A celebration of life service and luncheon will be held at St. John the Apostle Anglican Church in Port Moody on June 4 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations to www.campartaban.com/donations, the Alzheimer Society, or Children’s Hospital are appreciated. Expressions of sympathy can be made at www.burquitlamfuneralhome.ca
