Obituary for Maddalena Demichina

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Maddalena Demichina, adoring wife and loving mother, sadly passed away on April 5th, surrounded by her family.

Maddalena (Lena) was the fourth daughter welcomed by parents Nicola and Anna, in 1942, Bitonto, Italy. Tragically she lost her mother at a young age and therefore her Zia Maddalena assisted with raising her.

Coincidentally, it was her Zia, who introduced her to her greatest passion, sewing. Her talent of creating exquisite fashion from a simple idea, made her well known and sought after, well into her senior years. She even spent a few years teaching her skill, while living in Bitonto. Over the many decades you could find a Lena creation being worn by many, especially her family and friends. From Wedding dresses to Grad dresses and everything in between, she did it all with beaming pride.

In 1967, she met the love of her life Antonio. One year later she left her home and family to marry him and start their life together in British Columbia, Canada, where they raised their two daughters.

Lena was a lover of life and laughter. She could find humor in even the darkest of times. She also loved a party, big or small, it did not matter, any excuse to be with family and friends she would be there, with a smile on her face. Regardless of the time of night, her door was always open to a cup of coffee and a friendly chat. Though she had many health issues throughout her life, she always maintained a positive attitude. She was a fighter and pillar of strength to many. She was an example of how to live life to the fullest, regardless of what challenges life gave you.

She defied the odds for so long but unfortunately could not hold on any longer. She is predeceased by her parents, Nicola, Anna, sisters, Maria and Domenica. She will be deeply missed by many but especially her husband, Antonio, daughters, Teresa (Ivano), Anna-Maria, sister, Francesca (Michele), brother in laws, sister in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held at 11am on April 13th at St. Michael’s Parish, Private Burial to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the kidney foundation.
