Obituary for Patricia Mary Fry (Donaldson)

With her family by her side, Pat passed away peacefully to our Lord on November 17, 2019 at the age of 91. Predeceased by parents Alfred and Alice Shewan, brother Robert, and husbands Paul (Donaldson) and James (Fry). Pat is survived and greatly missed by daughters Heather (Gilbert) Maitoza of Fresno, California, and Karen (Laurie) Blimkie of Coquitlam, BC, grandchildren Edward (Kate), Cameron and Katie Maitoza and Alicia and Melissa Blimkie as well as two great grandsons, Edward Jr and Curtis Maitoza, and numerous members of the Fry family.

Pat was born to Irish and Scottish immigrant parents and grew up in the Rosemont area of Montreal. Her faith in God was the centre of her life. After marrying Paul, Pat spent most of her adult life in BC and Alberta. The family moved often with Paul’s naval and library careers. Wherever they lived, Pat quickly made herself part of the community, from Saskatoon, to Victoria, Vancouver, Fort St. John, Grande Prairie and Edmonton. She was very sociable, with a happy disposition and loved to dance. Pat was a fantastic cook and known for her fancy dinner parties. For many years she served as a Girl Guide leader and Commissioner in the Victoria area. Later, she became involved with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, and was awarded a life membership in recognition of her dedicated service. She worked many years in various offices, including architectural and law firms, and ended her career at Wallace & Spitz in Edmonton.

Pat lived in Edmonton for over thirty years. After Paul’s passing, she married Jim Fry and the two had nine happy years together with many evenings spent dancing at the Legion as well as at numerous family parties. Following Jim’s death, Pat moved to Coquitlam, BC in 2010 to live with her youngest daughter, Karen, eventually moving into Cartier House Care Home several years later.

While we are saddened by our loss, we are happy she is finally free from her wheelchair and the Alzheimer’s disease which she lived with for the past ten years.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Cartier House Care Home in Coquitlam for their excellent care over the past 7 years and in particular the 2nd floor care staff who provided such loving care in Mom’s final hours. We will forever remember your kindness and generosity of spirit.

Funeral Mass will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9830 – 148 Street, Edmonton, Alberta at 10 am on Saturday, January 4th, 2020.

Donations in Pat’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

“Love you forever Mom – see you later.

And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.”
