Obituary for Raymond Simmonds

Raymond Simmonds

Ray Simmonds, in his 98th year died peacefully September 28, 2021 at Eagle Ridge hospital after a short battle with cancer. He was born October 27, 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Alfred Simmonds and Thelma Schultz.

Ray grew up in the Dennistoun County of Glasgow and immediately signed up for the service when the War broke out in 1939. During the War he spent time as a Wireless Operator/ Air Gunner ultimately rising to the rank of Warrant Officer. Ray successfully performed 13 missions across Scotland, England, Canada and India. Along the way, he met the love of his life Mary (McMillan) and married March 24, 1948. Soon thereafter, Ray and Mary moved to Canada where they began a new life. Ray enjoyed a long and rewarding career with Shell Oil, performing several management roles, before retiring in 1981.

Despite his illuminous career, the part of life most precious to Ray was his family and extraordinary love for his lifelong partner Mary. The two of them were inseparable as they travelled the world and lived life fully with unwavering passion and energy. Their inspiring love story was always on full display as was his admiration, care and respect for Mary. Ray loved Mary unconditionally and being the consummate gentleman, would often be seen holding her hand and paying her compliments. It was truly special to be in their company and witness the bond.

On the lighter side, Ray had an affinity for music and technology. Since he was always anxious to showcase his new ‘gadget’ and rarely without song. In fact, it was pretty entertaining to see Ray engage many a person half his age with his intellectual curiosity.

In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by a brother Reggie. Ray is survived by his wife Mary, sons Rob (Liz) and Malcolm (Lynda), grandchildren Ryan, Shannon (Jimmy), Devin and Liam and great grandchildren Lennox and Dax. Ray loved his family deeply and his legacy of integrity, grace and wit will endure in his sons and their children.

The family has elected to have a small private service only and Ray’s ashes will be thoughtfully placed in both New Westminster, British Columbia and Boise, Idaho to enable both his boys and families to honor his life.
