Obituary for Richard Francis Harty
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard from his earthly life. Richard was born on August 25, 1968 in Fort William, ON and passed away at Burnaby General Hospital on April 7, 2021. Richard leaves behind his beloved wife, Maphil, his mother, Margaret, his daughters, Josie and Zuleyka, his extended family in the Philippines, as well as numerous cousins and friends. Although an only child, Richard was a brother to many, especially those in his care at Luke 15 House. Richard’s work was a calling to him from the Lord to be His hands and feet on this earth. He lived out this calling faithfully, joyfully and with great perseverance and trust in God’s love and mercy.
Richard’s journey was met with many twists and turns that brought him from the Thunder Bay area to Port Coquitlam, BC. The birth of his daughter, Josie in 2000 and his marriage to Maphil in 2016 and his travels throughout the Philippines with Maphil at his side, were the brightest and best moments of his treasured time on earth. A big part of his day to day life was his care of love and devotion toward his mom, Margaret.
Richard was received into the Roman Catholic Church at Easter 2014 and his journey with the Lord only further strengthened. In fact, we would say, his faith was deeper than the ocean. In the spring of 2016, he received his cancer diagnosis but with joyful surrender he continued on with plans to marry Maphil and travelled to and from the Philippines happily until the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020.
We give great thanks to the Tri-Cities Palliative Care Consultation team for their dignifying care in the home and for their loving support. As well, we extend much gratitude to the palliative care team at Burnaby General Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 3141 Shaughnessy Street, Port Coquitlam, BC at 10:00 am PST on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Interment to follow at the Port Coquitlam cemetery at a later date.
