Obituary for Simon Ping Wah Ching

We are devasted and shocked to announce that our beloved “Gong Gong” (grandpa), father, husband, brother, uncle and friend passed away suddenly, a few weeks short of his 75th birthday.

Simon was predeceased by his father Chiang Cheong, mother Lai Ah Yoon, brother Chiang Ping Lam, sister Chiang Kam Yoke (and brother-in-law Soo Sek Kong), sister Chiang Siew Keng and brother-in-law Brian Ng.

Simon is survived by his wife Melinda Yoon Peck Im, daughter Alison (Darcy McGowan), grandchildren Wally, Rhys and Tessa, sisters Chiang Kam Foong (Leong Kok Hoong),
Annie Chiang Kam Yip, Chiang Siew Leng (Rohan Seneviratna) and brother Chiang Kok Loong (Wendy) along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Simon was born in Ipoh, Malaysia and had a comfortable childhood that brought him opportunities to travel in his 20s: Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. He completed a degree at St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia with an interest in geology.
When Simon and his young family decided to immigrate, they naturally gravitated towards Canada but as Simon preferred milder climates they settled in Vancouver, BC and shortly after to Coquitlam where Simon would spend the last 32 years.
Immigrant life had its challenges and Simon found work in the food and restaurant industry but his real passion was tending to his plants and flowers in his garden.

A man of few words, Simon’s daughter remembers joyous moments flying a kite together at the park and learning chess after dinnertime. He also enjoyed the music of Anne Murray and Nat King Cole but was too shy to sing, even with that great voice of his.

The last 6 and half years brought about the most beautiful moments in Gong Gong’s life as he got to dote on his three wonderful grandchildren. He showed his love through his cooking (Gong Gong made some delicious meals), helping around the house, gardening and even babysitting occasionally.

We will cherish these wonderful memories of you, Gong Gong and we are so grateful for the time we had together. We hope that you are at peace and know that you were so loved and appreciated.

A private service was held. In lieu of flowers, in Gong Gong’s memory; go out and enjoy nature, plant a tree or vegetable and spend time with love ones- all the things that Simon so enjoyed on this Earth.
