Cydrick Julius Jager was born to Freida and Raymond Jager on September 25 th , 1937 at the
family homestead in Strom Bay, Bella Bella, British Columbia. The youngest of seven children,
Cyd grew up on the shoreline and learned the art of wood work, boating and fishing.
Losing his father at age seven, Cyd learnt much from working with his brother Bing and brother-
in-law Jack. His mother remarried and the family moved to Shearwater where Cyd and sister
Carol joined other children at the one room school.
After completing grade eight, Cyd first worked in a saw mill and then moved to salmon fishing.
Helped by Bing and Jack, Cyd built his own small boat the Miss Canada.
In 1958, Cyd invited Marjorie Busik on a date that lead to an extended courtship until their
wedding in November of 1959. During this year, Cyd bought the bigger boat, the Arabella II. A
year later daughter Darlene was born. A new dad with bigger responsibilities lead to log
salvaging and a move into halibut and herring fishing.
In 1964, son Warren was born and a desire for a larger home took root. Finding a great piece of
land in Coquitlam was followed by the building of a family home and of course the birth of
Brenda in 1967. The family moved into the new home in January 1968 and lives there today.
Learning that fur trapping was not a lucrative business in the 70’s, Cyd expanded the Arabella II
and experienced tuna fishing and the deep sea. New fishing regulations ended this loved
endeavour and saw Cyd focus closer to home. He eventually bought a second boat, the Nordic
Gold in the 80’s.
Cyd was an intelligent man and an inventor at heart. He continuously created personal tools and
gadgets to meet all of his work and creative needs. His workshop today is full of wonders to
behold.
Cyd treated everyone with respect. His ethical approach to decisions were acknowledged in his
appointment as a member of the Canadian section of the International North Pacific Fisheries
Commission. He was also an active member of the Prince Rupert Fishermen’s Cooperative.
A champion cribbage player, he was always up for a game and was rarely skunked due to his
skill for pegging. A much loved, kind and generous man, Cyd will be missed by his family and
friends.
