Ernest John Bergen

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved dad Ernie Bergen, peacefully at home in Coquitlam, surrounded by his daughters and a cherished family friend on July 7, 2026. 

Adored and devoted husband of Elizabeth "Betty Bergen”, until her passing in 2006, whom he cared for with great love and affection throughout a long illness, and father of daughters Cathy and Suzanne. 

He will be profoundly missed by his family, whom he loved so much: sister Annamarie Smirl, brother-in-law Bruce Smirl, sister-in-law Tina Bergen, his nieces & nephews, cousin John Rempel and extended family; his revered friends and his church family at Coquitlam Presbyterian Church. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Betty, brother Isaak Bergen, his parents Susanna (Olfert) Bergen and Isaac Bergen, and niece Lisa Smirl. 

Bom in Winnipeg in 1944, Ernie grew up in Sanford, Manitoba, working on the family farm from a young age. Seeking adventure and work opportunities, he moved to the west coast, where he met Betty, the love of his life. They endured many hardships with their health, but never stopped laughing together. 

His daughters were privileged to be able to care for Ernie at home as his health faltered. They will cherish the memories of that time together forever. 

Emie was a beautiful person with a caring, loyal heart and great sense of humour. We will miss him so much. The family extends our love & thanks to the many friends, caregivers, and medical professionals who provided support and kindness. Special thanks to Heidi and Dr Begum. 

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ernie's memory to the food bank of your choice. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on 2026-07-25 at Coquitlam Presbyterian Church, 948 Como Lake Ave.
