Ernest Collier

October 25, 1925 — January 10, 2014

Our Beloved Ernest John

Ernest John Collier was born on October 25th, 1925 in Leroy, SK and passed away on January 10th, 2014 in Port Moody BC. He is very lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 63 years, Ruth, as well as his daughters Maureen Williams (Bruce), Patricia MacCaull (Rik), and Alyce Collier as well as grandchildren Diana McNeill (Brian), Sara MacCaull, Erin McIntyre (Adam) and Jordan Collier. He was also blessed to have known his great-grandchildren Lucy and Aidan McNeill for a few years and was their GooGoo.

He was predeceased by his parents Bert and Leila Collier as well as his brother Bill Collier (Mickey) and brother-in-law Dean Lowell. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Lowell, Connie Breazeale (John), and Doug Collier (Barbara) of Klamath Falls, OR as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Dad enrolled as an able seaman in the Canadian Navy after graduating from the Duke of Connaught Senior High School. He later returned and attended Trapp Tech.

Dad worked for the Federal Government for many years at the New Westminster Penitentiary, and then later at William Head on Vancouver Island and Stony Mountain, MB. While living in the Colwood area Dad volunteered for the Colwood Fire Department. There were many times we heard the fire alarm go off in the middle of the night and Dad would answer the call. There was also a social element involved with volunteering at the Colwood Fire Hall which included picnics on the beach, Christmas parties and Hallowe'en parties.

In Stony Mountain Dad coached a boy's baseball team which we would sometimes watch on dusky prairie summer nights. One of Dad's favorite activities which he and Mom introduced to their children was camping. Our first camping trip was in May of 1967 at Falcon Lake. It was very cold but Mom and Dad's tent trailer provided a haven of warmth. After that camping trip we primarily camped at Opapiskaw in the Whiteshell Provincial Park where we swam, fished, and boated. Dad's lone figure fishing from the rocky shoreline was a strong indicator there might be fish for supper.

We lived in Stony Mountain for about 2 1/2 years and then moved to Winnipeg where Mom and Dad lived for the next 10 years. Dad retired from the federal government when he was 55. In 1983 they moved to BC where they lived in Maple Ridge. They lived there for close to 10 years and then moved to Coquitlam where they have resided for close to 20 years.

During this time Dad sang for a community choir and served on their condo board for a term. He also drove as a volunteer for people in need in the community.

Our Dad, Ernie was a great influence, role model and will be sadly missed.
