Garry Bryon Joe

March 2, 1944 — June 11, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Garry Bryon Joe on June 11, 2025. He passed away suddenly following his recovery from a lengthy illness. Garry was born in Vancouver, BC on March 2, 1944, to Sam and Mary Joe. He was the second of 3 children, which included his sister, Donna and his late brother, Errol.

He will be terribly missed by his family and friends. Garry was a strong, kind-hearted, funny, and generous man. He was a devoted husband, a caring father and a wonderful brother and uncle.

Garry survived a traumatic accident in his early 20’s and overcame many obstacles associated with being an amputee. He worked his way up from being a warehouseman for an auto parts distributor to being their General Manager. From there he had the courage to return to school as a mature student and obtained his Bachelor of Social Work from UBC. This was followed by a second career as an Addictions Counselor until his retirement. He was an avid sports fan, a faithful friend and was happy to share his opinion on just about anything with anybody.

Garry is survived by his wife Liz, his two children Denise (John Ulmer) and Jason, Grandchildren Calen Johl, Devyn Robinson and Jordan Ulmer, and Great Grandchildren, Percy and Jack Oshanski.

The family would like to thank his Doctors, Nurses and Staff from the Hemodialysis Unit at Royal Columbian Hospital as well as the nurses and staff at Queen’s Park Care Centre. We are also very grateful for the constant support Garry received from WorkSafe BC. We would also like to thank Burquitlam Funeral Home, for the care and guidance where arrangements for Garry have been made.

This has been such a huge loss for our family, but we take comfort in knowing that his suffering is over and he has been reunited with his brother Errol and Grand Daughter Brieanne. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
