Henry George Engelking passed away surrounded by loved ones at the age of 85. George was predeceased by his parents Henry and Jane, brother Edward, twin sister Helen Grace, wife Edith, and Evelyn Dalzell, mother of his two children. He will be greatly missed by his children Darlene (Robert) Bushby, Henry (Lesley) Engelking, grandchildren Renee (Yoan) Zola, Kurtis Bussmann, Lauren and Bradley Engelking, Roxanne Crowe, Tawnia (Myles) Spargo, great grandchildren Tayler, Gage, Briggs and Torie Spargo, Adalei Jupiter Litwin as well as his partner for the last five years Gail Wood.
George spent his formative years in Manyberries and other southern Alberta towns. At age 17 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and promptly fell in love with the ocean. His duties included a posting on the HMCS Fortune 151, the flagship of the Second Canadian Minesweeping Squadron, and the HMCS Sioux 225 Destroyer. Following his time in the navy, he settled in Vancouver. He worked for the Vancouver School Board as a custodial engineer, finishing his career at Britannia Secondary School. George lived his retirement years to the fullest, enjoying many hobbies such as fishing, gardening, curling, lawn bowling, long walks with his cherished dog Sam, dancing and travelling with Gail.
A memorial of George's life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Burquitlam Funeral Home, 625 North Road, Coquitlam BC, at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to World Vision of Canada or a charity of your choice.
