Helena Van Duynhoven

March 8, 1934 — December 25, 2022

Magdelena Johanna Maria van Duynhoven (nee Ammerlaan), also known as Lena, passed away on Christmas Day to join her late husband, Christianus (Chris). She will be lovingly remembered by her children Neil (Cathy), Jack (Leanne), Miriam (John Campagne), and Lisa (Troy Van Vliet). She was Oma to eleven grandchildren Christopher (Michelle), Daniel, Amanda, Kymberlee, Nicholas (Kelsey), Alysha, Michael, Zachary (Helena), Thomas, Tayla, and Annika and great-Oma to Brooklyn and Ryan.

Lena was born in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands, on March 8, 1934. As a newly married couple, her and Chris immigrated to Canada in the late 1950’s. They eventually settled in Burnaby, where she resided for over 60 years. Leaving her career as a social worker, Lena managed the office of Chris’ Garden Service, which she continued to run after Chris passed away in 1980. In her free time, Lena enjoyed volunteering with the BC Cancer Agency, Brownies, Girl Guides, and school and church events.

Lena will be remembered for her hard work, strong will, and love of her family. In times of crisis or hardship, she was always the first to ask: “what can I do to help?” She enjoyed gardening, reading, and playing games with her grandchildren. She dedicated her life to serving others and was devoted to her faith.

A Funeral Mass is being held for close family on January 5, 2023, at St. Clare of Assisi Parish. The Burial will take place on January 10, 2023, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

A special thanks to the staff at Cartier House Long Term Care facility in Coquitlam, who cared for Lena for the past eight years.
