James Bassett

Bassett – James McLean (Jim) passed away on October 23, 2012 In Port Coquitlam B.C.
Jim was a successful man in the military, in business, and community activates. Most of all he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Jim was born on February 25, 1926, in Woodstock, Ontario where he lived for the first 43 years of his life. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Norma who shared his life for over 60 years, bringing much happiness and direction to his life. Also by his Sons David (Carolyn) of Port Moody B.C. Richard (Amanda) of London England; grandchildren Westley, Kimberley, Erick, James and Sasha, brother in law Gordon Landeg in Hamilton, Ontario, and many nieces and nephews in Ontario. His youngest son, John in 2003, sadly predeceased him.
Jim spent his early working years in the retail men’s clothing field but changed careers in 1964 becoming an investment advisor with Midland Osler Ltd in London Ontario but working in Woodstock.. Jim continued as working in Woodstock. In 1967 he was promoted to Mgr and transferred to Brantford Ont. In 1969 he was moved again to become Manager of the Victoria B.C. branch. In 1974 the firm merged with Doherty McQuaig to form Midland Doherty Ltd. Jim continued as Branch Manager later becoming Resident Director responsible for Vancouver Island. He partially retired in 1989 and fully in 1994.
In his youth he was a member of the Canadian Army Militia, served briefly in the Army in Canada, in the Second World War, and after, remaining an active member of the Reserves for 23 years. He retired with the rank of Major from the Third Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, in 1964. He was an active member of the Victoria Golf Club until his passing.
