Janet Lee Maclellan

February 28, 1951 — September 10, 2025

Richmond

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Lee MacLellan on September 10, 2025 in Richmond, BC. She was 74 years old.

Janet was born on February 23, 1951 to Norma and Donald MacLellan in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. The family moved to Lower Plymouth, Pictou County where Janet graduated from East Pictou Rural High School. She went on to graduate from Acadia University with a B.A. and B.Ed.

She started her teaching career in West Pictou before the need for adventure overtook her and she served as teacher and then as principal at schools in Masset, Bella Bella and the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Following a long-held dream, she earned a MA and a Masters in Counselling Psychology so that she could pursue her dream of a career in student counselling.

In 1983, Janet met Mireille (Ali) Grenier and took her in as her daughter and family. She was a devoted foster mother and friend whose love knew no bounds.

Janet loved to help and be of service to others whether that be helping and supporting students as a counsellor, friend, family or with fostering animals and being a live kidney donor to her sister, Carol.

In 2015, she retired from counselling and spent her time on her home and acreage doing what she loved most - being in nature on her property and tending to her many gardens as well as fostering dogs and cats for the BCSPCA. In 2022, she moved to Steveston, a fishing village in Richmond, BC but longed to return to the Fraser Valley country area.

Janet was predeceased by her mother, Norma (MacLellan) Manning, father Donald MacLellan and sister Carol Davidson. She is lovingly survived by her foster daughter Mireille (Ali) Grenier of Richmond BC, sister Gretchen (Richard) Lohnes, Halifax, brother Carl MacLellan of Halifax, NS and nephews and nieces Ryan, Steven and Kristen MacLellan, Robert and Kathy Porter, Gregory Streatch, Lesley Maskini and many friends on both coasts.

At her request, there will be no funeral, and her ashes will be scattered

A celebration of life will be held and announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the BC Transplant Society or the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BCSPCA), organizations very close to Janet's heart.
