Coquitlam

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Karl Schuler on May 22, 2026, at the age of 85.

Karl-Heinz Hartmut Klaus Schuler was born on September 12, 1940, in Berlin, Germany, the youngest child of Eva and Wilhelm Schuler. His big brother Wolfgang and big sister Brigitte helped to take care of him while their mother worked. At age 15 he began his apprenticeship as a tool and die maker. Upon completing the program three years later, at age 18, he made the journey to Canada. Wolfgang and Brigitte had already emigrated, settling in Winnipeg, and he joined them there.

Within a couple of years, he met Rosemarie, herself an immigrant from Germany in her youth. They were married in 1962; after debating whether to return to Germany, they decided to remain in their new homeland.

Their first son, Peter, was born in 1968. A couple of years later, tired of Winnipeg winters, they sought out warmer climes on the west coast. Following brief stops in Victoria and North Vancouver, they finally settled in Coquitlam in the fall of 1970, moving into what is still the family home. Their second son, Erick, was born in 1974. Among the highlights for the young family were summer vacations with Dad driving the motorhome around the western provinces and states.

Karl continued working as a tool and die maker for local companies throughout his career. After retiring in 2005, his favourite pastime was hiking with his buddies from the Cliffhuggers; he remained an avid hiker into his eighties, and often served as the group’s unofficial photographer. He was well loved in the neighbourhood for conversation and caring for properties when their owners were away. His biggest love was his family, and he especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren.

Karl passed away surrounded by his family on May 22, 2026. He is survived by his wife Rosemarie, sons Peter (Zoé) and Erick (Jill), and grandchildren Emily, Zachary, and Henry. He will be missed.
