It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Winona Long. Margaret, known as Winona, was born to Ethel and Thomas Pendygrasse in Vancouver, British Columbia. Winona grew up in North Burnaby with her sister, Mary. Shortly after graduating high school, she moved to Hawaii for a work holiday and when she returned embarked on a world tour with four friends on the SS Himalaya. Aboard the ship, Winona met her future husband, Gavin Andrew Long. Gavin and Win continued their shipboard romance when they arrived in Wellington New Zealand and were married there and had two daughters before her husband died tragically on July 3, 1963. Winona then moved back to Burnaby where she gave birth to their youngest daughter.
Winona supported her family working as a medical stenographer at Vancouver Hospital and the Cancer Control Agency. She spent her summers with her daughters, many friends and families in Boundary Bay where they spent time walking the beach, sunbathing and swimming in the ocean. Once her daughters were grown, she renewed her love of travel visiting countries all over the world including frequent trips to Australia to see her daughter Anne and family as well as New Zealand to see family there. She also visited many other countries with friends and never had trouble finding someone to enjoy these adventures with. Locally she enjoyed Cross Country Skiing, Kayaking, Dragon Boating and Outrigger. She liked to stay active and enjoyed the outdoors. She also enjoyed live theatre holding seasons tickets the Stanley Theatre and later the Evergreen Theatre in Coquitlam.
Winona is survived by daughters, Sandra Berry, Anne Bruce (Stephen) and Geri Grigg (Mark) and grandchildren Gavin, Michael, Christine, Lauren, Erika, Andrea, Sean and Katrina. She also had great grandchildren Hayley, Jasmine, Oscar, Sophie and Evelyn. She is predeceased by her parents, Ethel and Thomas, her husband Gavin and her son-in-law Tom.
A funeral service will be held October 4, 2025, at 2:00 pm at St. John the Apostle Anglican Church, 2208 St. John’s Street, Port Moody, BC with the Reverand Jeanne Forte officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant House, Union Gospel Mission or a charity of your choice.
