It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-beloved Margaret Maureen Sutherland (Sullivan) on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Maureen was 68 years old. She passed peacefully at Eagle Ridge Hospital, in Port Moody BC. Maureen was predeceased by her father Robert, mother Erna, oldest brother Robert (Bob) and her sister in law Pam. Maureen is survived by her loving husband Grant, and her two sons Mark and Neil. Maureen is also survived by her sister Carol Fehr (Wayne), brother Tom Sullivan (Pam) sister Barb Backland (Leon) sister Colleen Snyder (Tom) and sister Joan Halayko (Paul), as well as an extensive extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Maureen was born on June 30, 1958 in St Boniface Manitoba, the middle child of 7 children. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with her Bachelor of Education in 1980. Maureen and Grant moved to Vancouver in 1982 and she joined the Archdiocese of Vancouver, and taught for 41 years. She had a lifelong impact on the lives of countless children and their families.
Her compassion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the success of her family and community was the essence of her life’s work. Nowhere was this more evident than in the pride Maureen took in her two sons joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Grant, Mark and Neil wish to thank all of Maureen’s friends, family and colleagues who helped make her last months so valuable with their visits and shared humor. We would also like to thank our respective work and social networks, for their support, generosity, patience and assistance.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 3141 Shaughnessy St, Port Coquitlam on Friday October 16, 2026 at 11:00AM.
An interment of her ashes will follow in Winnipeg 2026, in the early summer of 2027. For now, we thank God for the time we had with Maureen, and take solace in the fact she is at rest and no longer enduring cancer or the treatment thereof.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that anybody wishing to make a donation would consider the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
