Mario Bernardelli

After an extended struggle with dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, Mario Bernardelli (family by his side) died quietly in the early hours of September 3, 2013.

Mario is survived by his wife Olga of 63 years, his Son Bobby and wife Lida, hisson Michael and partner Isabelle, Elvia Romenelli, and many loving nieces, nephews and family members in Montreal, Toronto, and Italy.

Mario was born in Settefratti, Frosinone , Italy on February 28, 1924. He and his brother Donato immigrated to Montreal in 1948, where they joined their eldest brother Giovanni. Mario arrived in Canada on June 17th and began working at Canada Cement on September 7th of that same year. For Mario, his first day of work at Canada Cement was to be the start of a thirty-year career, at the beginning of which he quickly gained the respect of his co-workers due to his patience, his meticulous attention to detail, and his endless energy in completing the work assigned.

The year 1948 seemed to be a good year for Mario: before June came to an end, he met Olga Polisena. Mario and Olga were married on May 20th, 1950. In 1951, Mario and Olga’s son Bobby was born, followed by son Michael in 1955. In between the births of Bobby and Michael, Mario and his brother Giovanni built their own duplex in a working-class neighborhood of east-end Montreal. And on December 14, 1955, Mario received and proudly accepted his Canadian citizenship.

Within a few years, Mario (through his determination and strong work ethic) had achieved—if it can be said—the Canadian dream: he came to Canada; found work; got married; began raising a family; built a home for his young family; and became a Canadian citizen. During these early years in a place far removed from his little Italian village, Mario’s successes enabled him to pursue a long and fulfilling life in a country that provided him with the kinds of opportunities unavailable to him in Settefratti.

Mario will be sorely missed by so many people whom he so dearly touched during a lifetime of giving and sharing. Surrounded by family and friends, he was quietly put to rest at Ocean View Burial Park (Burnaby, B.C.), South Mausoleum, on Friday, September 6th , 2013.
