Melita Hume

June 29, 1921 — December 27, 2012

Melita Jean Hume (nee Fraser)
June 29, 1921 – December 27, 2012

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Melita, our beloved Mother, daughter of the late William and Mary (McPherson) Fraser, in New Westminster, British Columbia. Cherished wife of the late Ian Knowlton Hume for 64 years, she had a long, rich and fulfilling life. Family meant everything to her and she was a devoted mother to her children and their spouses: Edward (deceased), Margaret (Tom - deceased) Swift, Heather (John) Taylor, Laurel (Fred - deceased) Vickers and Vicki (Andy) Young.

Trained as a teacher, she had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and a great love of books that she passed on to all her children and grandchildren. Melita’s grandchildren Tracy, Todd, Jordan, Jenny, Carl, Dustin, Nat, Jeffrey and Lindsay remember her most fondly as an imaginative and playful "Gamma". Melita and Ian’s commitment to each other provided a wonderful example to them and their spouses: Sara, Jacinthe, Dean, Mary Ann, Anita and Trina. Melita also was fortunate to see eight great-grandchildren born: Stuart, Julia, Alexandre, Nina, Calvin, Brena, Logan and Jaime.

Melita is survived by her sisters and brothers; Myrna, Mona, Jean, Jim and Don, her sisters-in-law Mildred “Midge” (Donald - deceased) Hume and Carol Fraser and their families, and predeceased by her siblings Dorothy, Florence, Mary and William and her sister-in-law Mildred (Maitland) Hunter. After spending most of her life in Quebec (Gaspe Peninsula, Richmond, St. Lambert and Melbourne) she lived her last two and half years in British Columbia.

Our beautiful mother's grace, patience and strength of character were a source of inspiration to all her family. We love her dearly.

A visitation and tea were held in Coquitlam in December. Final services and burial will take place in Foster, Quebec in the summer. Please leave condolences in the Book of Memories at www.burquitlamfunerals.com where you can also view and upload memories and photos.
