Olive Niven

July 18, 1918 — April 25, 2017

Olive Lucy Niven (nee Sheasby) 1918-2017

Olive was born in Isham, Saskatchewan. She grew up happy to live on a productive prairie farm with her siblings; Alan, Winnie, Eileen, Mabel and Tom, all of whom she outlived.

Olive started her long teaching career in a small teacherage in Saskatchewan at the young age of 20. She later moved to B.C. where she married Norman (Red) Niven and taught until her retirement in 1973. Olive spoke fondly of Hjorth Road School and especially her many years teaching at Bridgeview Elementary in Surrey where she held the principal, Mr. Moberg, in high regard.

Olive and Red lived on a small farm in Surrey where family and friends were always welcome. Red’s son, Bob, and Olive’s brother Tom both lived with them as well. They had milk cows, chickens, 2 Highland bulls, 2 shetland ponies, their precious pekingese dogs, and cats.

After Red died, Olive and Tom lived in Coquitlam. They enjoyed family and their little canine friends, and their good neighbours, Margaret and Janey. Olive did not have children but she loved and cared about Red’s family. She also loved and encouraged all her nieces and nephews, who were supported kindly and generously in one way or another over the years.

Olive’s favourite pastimes were reading, writing, creating pressed flower arrangements, and especially gardening. Many people have plants started in her garden, or given to them when she moved. She and Tom spent many hours out in the yard together, thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.

Olive was a true survivor. She lived in her own home well into her 90’s, with Margaret’s assistance, and then moved to Belvedere Care Centre. She liked to think about making it to 100 and was 3 months short of her 99th birthday when she died. She was a true inspiration to her family and friends.

Olive requested a small, private gathering of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favourite charity.
