“Grief is simply love with no place to rest.”

It is never easy to say goodbye to someone you love and cherish. With a heavy heart, I share the sudden passing of Richard (Rick) Wayne Byhre on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Rick leaves behind his wife of more than 30 years, Loucinda Pelkey, his mother Donna Byhre, his sister Cindy Byhre, brother‑in‑law Chris Wragg, his nephew Spencer Wray, and a wide circle of friends who will feel his absence deeply.

Born in New Westminster, Rick spent his entire life in Port Moody and Belcarra. There wasn’t a corner of Port Moody that didn’t hold a story only he could tell. His studies at SFU and BCIT led him to a career of more than 30 years with BCTEL/TELUS, where he served in both union and management roles.

Rick had the patience of Job — he approached every problem with determination and never stopped until he found a solution. He loved animals almost more than people; every neighbourhood dog knew he carried three cookies in his pocket just for them. He also loved to cook, and although he never followed a recipe, his creations were almost always a success.

There will be no funeral service, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Rick always felt that flowers were wasteful. In his memory, please consider a donation to an animal organization—such as a local SPCA chapter or any rescue in need.

My heartfelt thanks go to the Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department, BC Ambulance, and the local RCMP detachment for their compassion during this difficult time.
