Serguei Axentsev passed away at home peacefully at the age of 76.
A first-generation Canadian, and a native of Minsk, Belarus (of the former USSR), Serguei had a highly successful scientific career in biophysics.
He was awarded a higher doctoral degree (Doctor of Sciences) in 1985 for his significant contributions to biological sciences, and became a professor in 1996. As an established and recognized scholar, he supervised many successful Ph.D. researchers, published numerous important academic papers in international peer-reviewed journals, and completed and defended two dissertations, while leading complex experimental studies of membranes in the synapses of brain neurons.
He was predeceased by his older brother Felix (1944), who perished as a soldier during World War II, mother Nehama (1984), and father Lipa (1994), who was a Soviet fighter in World War II and then survived the repressions while in Gulag labor camps.
Serguei will be lovingly remembered in Canada by his devoted wife of 51 years, Nelia, son Felix, daughter-in-law Natalia, grandsons Stan and Scott, and many close friends and students around the world.
A Viewing will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday, December 19th at Burquitlam Funeral Home. Memorial donations in memory of Serguei can be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at http://www.canadianpulmonaryfibrosis.ca.
