Shirley passed away suddenly while in hospital on June 11, 2025 at the age of 85 years.
Born in Hanna, Alberta on August 25, 1939, to Albert and Emma Graumann, the youngest of seven. Shirley grew up in the Handhills, on the family farm. Hardworking and
a caregiver, it was only natural for her to become a nurse. Working as a LPN in Hanna, she met Brent Stewart, of Eldon, PEI, and shortly thereafter, in October 1962, they married.
Brent and Shirley moved to Hamilton, Ontario, and in 1963, became parents to Michael, then Wilma in 1964. In search of a milder climate, they moved to BC in 1968, settling first in Richmond, then
Coquitlam in March 1976.
Shirley was not only the family matriarch, but worked with Brent at the family business, Talisman Alignment in Port Moody. Then in July 1982, Brent's untimely passing left Shirley widowed.
Eventually, she returned to nursing, working at Royal Columbian Hospital up until 2017.
Not one to be idle, Mom could always be found in the kitchen or garden. Especially fond of roses, she tended rosebeds at Dogwood pavillion, and was a Rose Society member.
Her prized roses won many awards at annual rose shows. Shirley had the best of friends with whom she travelled and saw the world. A lover of animals, Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, bingo and a diehard Canucks fan.
Family was at the core of Mom's life and happiness. She was proud of Michael and Wil and loved being "Grammie" to her three grandchildren. Family reunions in Alberta were highlights, as were trips back East, to
visit Brent's family in PEI.
In October 2017, Mom moved to Maple Ridge to be closer to family.
Predeceased by her siblings, Edna, Edward, Laura, Bertha, Ruby, Clarence and Ernie, as well, numerous neices and nephews.
Mom is loved and missed by Michael, Zackary, Dexter, Megan and Wilma (Mark), predeceased by her beloved grand-gelding, Arlo, in 2024.
As was Mom's wish, there will be no memorial service.
Special thanks to, cousin Darlene for your support and comfort during "Borderline's" passing, and to Maple Ridge Seniors Village staff and residents for the supportive care and community you
provided Mom the last year and a half of her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
