Shirley passed away suddenly while in hospital on June 11, 2025 at the age of 85 years.
Born in Hanna, Alberta on August 25, 1939, to Albert and Emma Graumann, the youngest of seven. Shirley grew up on the family farm, in the Handhills. Hardworking and a caregiver, a career in nursing was a natural choice. Working as a LPN in Hanna, she met Brent Stewart, of Eldon, PEI, and shortly thereafter, in October 1962, they married.
Brent and Shirley moved to Hamilton, Ontario, and in 1963, became parents to Michael, then Wilma in 1964. In search of a milder climate, they moved to BC in 1968, settling first in Richmond, then Coquitlam in March 1976. Shirley was the family matriarch and also worked with Brent at the family business, Talisman Alignment in Port Moody. In July 1982, Brent's untimely passing left Shirley widowed. Mom eventually returned to nursing, working at Royal Columbian Hospital until her retirement, after which she returned to work as a care aide until 2017.
Not one to be idle, If she wasn't at the hospital, she could be found in the kitchen, her garden or tending the rose-beds at Dogwood pavilion. Mom's prized roses won many awards at annual rose society shows. Outside of work, Mom spent time with family, as well as many dear friends. She travelled and saw the world but was just as happy on a good road trip. Over the years, family reunions in Alberta were highlights, as were trips down-East, to visit Brent's family in PEI. A proud Canadian, Mom
Family was central to Mom's life, so in October 2017, she moved to Maple Ridge to be closer to the kids. She was a proud Mom and Grammie to her three grandchildren.
Mom is loved and missed by Michael, Zackary, Dexter, Megan and Wilma (Mark), predeceased by her beloved grand-gelding, Arlo and her dog, Ripple.
Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, bingo and a diehard Canucks fan
Predeceased by her siblings, Edna, Edward, Laura, Bertha, Ruby, Clarence and Ernie, as well, numerous nieces and nephews.
As was Mom's wish, there will be no memorial service.
Special thanks to, cousin Darlene for your love and support following "Borderline's" passing, and to Maple Ridge Seniors Village staff and residents for the supportive care and community you provided Mom the last year and a half of her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
