Stuart Macaskill

January 16, 1988 — November 22, 2023

Stuart Campbell MacAskill, our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend passed away suddenly on November 22, 2023 following complications from a ruptured appendix. Stuart is survived by his grieving parents Catherine and Colin MacAskill, his younger brother Angus MacAskill, and two older sisters Courtenay Bric (Kevin), and Lindsay Hay (Andrew).

Stuart was born on January 16, 1988 in Richmond, BC. He grew up, went to school, and lived most of his life in Coquitlam. He also attended Bond University in Australia for eighteen months. He played soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and basketball and was a member of the Port Moody Aquarian Swim Club. Stuart particularly enjoyed hiking with his brother Angus.

Stuart was a very generous, kind hearted, friendly and caring man. He was particularly sensitive to peoples’ feelings and to those in need. He was a passionate rap music enthusiast, writing a great many songs over the past twenty years – songs dedicated to members of his family and friends, those who are still living, and some who had passed away. Stuart’s songs often told stories of his life’s struggles and many expressed messages of perseverance and encouragement.

Our beloved Stuart/Stu would often return home to Coquitlam without his newly purchased warm coat, hat and once, his shoes. On one occasion, his mother picked him up at the Sky Train station in New Westminster and he was in his stocking feet – minus the brand new pair of Nike sneakers his parents had purchased for him the day before. His frustrated mother would often say: “Stuart, what did you do with your coat, hat, or shoes?” His answer was always the same - ‘Mom, I met someone downtown who needed them more than me’. Stu was always a very empathetic and compassionate person who understood the needs of those less fortunate than himself.

A remembrance tribute to honour Stuart and an opportunity to share stories of this special man’s life will be held at a later date in the New Year. If you wish to make a charitable donation in Stuart’s memory, there were two causes he was passionate about - the Union Gospel Mission in the Downtown Eastside community (ugm.ca) or the Tri Cities Mental Health Unit in Port Coquitlam, BC- specifically (NewViewsociety.org).
