In loving Memory of
Sylvia Teresa Amos (Hammersley)
April 17, 1926-February 28,2013
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom and Nana. She passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Sylvia/Terri was born in West Ham, United Kingdom. In 1952, Sylvia married James Colin Amos and they were happily married for 43 years. Looking for a better life the two emigrated to Canada in 1956. The first year they settled in Vancouver. In 1958, work took them to Calgary but they soon returned to BC, settling in the small town of Port Coquitlam. It was here Sylvia and James raised their 3 children Alison, Susan (Frank) and Kevin (Sophia). Sylvia worked side by side with her husband in building the family Young Drivers of Canada business. Family time was spent exploring the beauty of BC Parks and camp grounds. Sylvia enjoyed square dancing, knitting and crafts. The 3 grandchildren Danielle, Justine and Travis were frequently seen sporting sweaters Nana had knitted. In 1986, Sylvia and James retired and moved to Pitt Meadows and enjoyed the life of Snowbirds. During the winter they would spend time socializing with friends they made in Arizona. In 1995, Sylvia was widowed and took comfort in her family, grandchildren and the Catholic Church. She took in a new companion “Missy”(the cat) to keep her warm at night. Sylvia continued to travel and returned to England to visit sister Brenda, (Peter) nephews Simon and Jonathon. Sylvia stayed true to her roots enjoying her English TV shows and kept close contact with her friends in England. She loved playing cards with family and friends and will be fondly remembered with her trademark saying of “Really, Did I Win?” For the past four years Sylvia resided at Amica Retirement home in Port Coquitlam, where she was a board member and part of the volunteer group “Helping Hands.” She was proud of the accomplishments this group achieved to support seniors in need.
Sylvia showed great strength, courage and compassion in her last 3 months. She had a good sense of humour, a quick wit and a welcoming smile. She will be missed by all who knew her. Thanks to all the staff at Eagle Ridge Hospital for the care and compassion you showed our mother.
A Requiem Mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday March 8th, 2013, at All Saints Church, 821 Fairfax at Como Lake Ave, Coquitlam.
