Thomas ‘Trevor’ Chattaway, 74, died on Tuesday, February 13. He is lovingly remembered and will be greatly missed by Mary Anne, his wife of 50 years, daughters Jennifer (Dave) and Liz (Lee), grandson Travis, granddaughters Samantha and Meg, extended family and friends.
Born in London, England, Trevor followed his brother, Brian, to Canada in 1965. It wasn’t long before he crossed paths with Mary Anne Powell and they married in 1967. After several construction-related jobs, he joined the Vancouver Fire Department in 1970 and proudly served until 2000, reaching the rank of Captain.
Trevor was very involved in family life, one of the few dads at that time who accompanied his daughters on school field trips. He got involved in officiating the girls’ sports and could always be counted on to help friends and family in any way he could. He also showed remarkable generosity for people he would never meet, donating over a hundred liters of blood to the Red Cross. In his retirement, he became an enthusiastic puppy trainer for the BC Guide Dog Services and happy host at Chattaway’s Bed ‘n Breakfast.
Trevor’s final years were marred by dementia. In 2013, his physical capabilities deteriorated and he was confined to a wheelchair. At this time, he moved to Eagle Ridge Manor Residential Care. They provided exceptional care for Trevor, engaging activities such as live music, bingo, bell choir and more, and offered support and friendship to Mary Anne on her nearly daily visits. We are deeply grateful to the staff who were kind and supportive, especially in his last days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or BC Guide Dog Services in memory of Trevor.
