William(Bill) Donald MacKenzie, age 82, passed away quietly on Friday May 10th, 2024, at his home in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, a day on which the beautiful Northern Lights bore witness to the rising of his spirit.
Bill was born on May 12, 1941 to Nellie Wallace and Duncan MacKenzie in the beautiful mountain town of Banff, Alberta. It is in the Rockies that he developed his nearly lifelong passion for skiing. After high school he went on the study Dentistry at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, graduating in 1966 and subsequently continued his service commitment to the Canadian Armed Forces with postings in Ottawa, Ontario and Lahr, Germany.
Upon their return from Germany in 1971, Bill and Karen made their new home on the West Coast in Burnaby, BC. It is in British Columbia where Bill’s professional life flourished and where he put down roots for his family. Along with Jim Morrison and Geoffrey Remocker, they established the North Burnaby Dental Group, a busy clinical practice that remains to this day.
Bill held a lifelong passion for travel, skiing, golf and good food. He had the opportunity to set foot on nearly all the world’s continents and sampled the cuisine of countless countries along the way.
Bill’s North Star in life was his true love Ella MacKenzie. Together they made a beautiful life together and their home in Port Coquitlam became an important gathering point for family and friends. Bill and Ella’s collective generosity touched the lives of so many of
their close friends as they tirelessly welcomed people into their home for vacation stays, parties and the regular spectacle of the ‘Tender Tootsies’.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Ella MacKenzie who remained unconditionally supportive of his medical struggles, particularly in the final years of his life. He is also survived by his siblings Patricia, Mike (Liz) and Sandy; his children Monika (Terry) MacKenzie, Kent (France) MacKenzie, Jeff Kilback and Dennis Kilback; his grandchildren Thomas Tarling, Tristan and James MacKenzie as well as Jesse, Hayley and Tyson Kilback.
Bill was preceded in death by his father Duncan, his mother Nellie as well as the mother of his own children, Karen MacKenzie.
In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family requests donations in honour to either Parkinson’s Canada, the BC Cancer Society or a charity of choice. A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at a date and time to be disclosed.
