James was my first CO in Okanagan. I did not know him long, but I did learn a lot from him and was (and continue to be) in awe of the passionate, professional and skillful way he went about his business. After my first month or so serving under his command, almost all of it at sea, we arrived for a well-earned break in Bermuda. I think it may have been his last patrol as Captain of a Navy Submarine. I can still picture him on that Bermuda beach, glass in hand, suitably dressed for the sun and sharing war stories with us, his officers, while contemplating life after the Navy. I asked him why he would leave the Navy and his answer was, as always, short, sharp, precise and undebatable: I am not the admiral type. And without a beat he carried on with the war stories. Well, he obviously chose an excellent path. Amazing career and an inspiring leader. Fair winds James. You left us too soon. Deepest condolences to your family.
