Obituary for Frank Joseph Slyman

Frank Joseph Slyman
SLYMAN, Frank
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Frank Joseph Slyman, on February 28, 2016. Born on January 13, 1931 and predeceased by his father Mohammed H. Slyman and mother Mary Justine Slyman. Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Yvonne; daughters Laura Lee Cormier (Mark), Robbie Lynn Marchildon (Oliver), Marla Rae Jenkins (Peter) and son Bradley Wayne Slyman (Mairead); five grandchildren, Crystal, Bill, Kamille, Ryan and Kyle; and three great- grandchildren Masyn, Rylan, and Brinley.

Frank became a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 115 on July 17, 1959. After working on construction sites throughout Northern BC for many years, he was hired by Local 115 as a dispatcher in Prince George. He later became a business agent and was instrumental in organizing non-union workers. His motto was "Never Give Up!" Frank loved hockey and was involved in the Prince George Minor Hockey Association, where his son Brad was a player. After retirement and moving to Burnaby, Frank volunteered his time (with his wife Yvonne by his side) as the "sick committee" representative for Local 115. They visited housebound and hospitalized members and attended funerals. He was also an active volunteer for the NDP. Frank and Yvonne were recipients of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee award.

With special thanks to his caregivers Roma, Rosalee, Rita and staff at the George Derby Centre. Service to be held at the Burquitlam Funeral Home, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Operating Engineers Auditorium in Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
