Condolence: I was walking around port moody for the first time since moving here last night and i went out on the docks to have a 'chat' with my little girl lilee-jean. I saw the balloon, and flowers, 2 of her favourite things, that someone had placed on marlenes bench for thanksgiving. It was just such a coincidence so I had to try and get ahold of someone in marlenes family. My daughter lilee passed away from cancer on september 6th at just 2 years old. She loved the water, so thats where I always go to remember her and talk to her, and then i saw marlenes bench with the balloon and I knew they must be together celebrating thanksgiving. I hope you all are doing ok. And I hope my little story helped brighten ur day a bit as it did mine. feel free to email me to say hi if you want. thanks

Condolence: Dear Gary, Mike, Karen and Logan. Our deepest sympathy on your loss. Marlene was a good friend and a skating mother buddy. We used to cover for each other when Karen and Jackie skated. We had many fun times together. She was always so logical and truthful, and so kind. I knew I could always call on her for help. Karen, she left you with a legacy of being strong, and I know you will be. I am so sorry we couldn't make the memorial, our thoughts were with you. Love Ede & Jack.

Condolence: What a great friend Marlene has been to my family here in Winnipeg. She came down a few years ago to help me when I had a hip replacement. Who does that? Marlene, that's who.
We had a wonderful time going on a camping trip and garage saleing in Ontario a few years back. What a crazy time that was. And always we have to have beautiful coloured wine glasses which Marlene always brings for each gal.
Then at Maria Burton's Wedding cruise, Marlene and I were cabin mates....... We just fit together like old friends do. Laughing, joking, talking , even a few tears. Yes Marlene I am really going to miss you. In fact I miss you all ready. Love you my friend and send you off with memories in my heart that are all precious to me. Ciao

I hope everything goes well. And, even though there will be much sadness, I hope you all have a wonderful time remembering how wonderful Marlene was and all the good that she did.

Condolence: Marlene was my Mom’s best friend, they knew each other since kindergarten. It was a sister relationship that transcended blood relations. And I was fortunate to have a kindred spirit with Marlene as we loved the outdoors and loved to run. In running we found stillness; it was an opportunity to gather perspective and appreciate our lives and loved ones.

Marlene lived open and honestly, and wasn’t afraid to express her opinions, as her family and friends can attest. She spoke directly from her heart to yours. Underneath her tough exterior was a deeply caring spirit, that was mother and nurse, and that always wanted the best for those around her. And she would undoubtedly reach out and care for those that needed it the most and were unlikely to ask for help. Her care extended for many years and affected many; within the jail system, to those living with HIV, and to countless that struggled with addiction.

I have received much kindness and love from Marlene and her family and I was fortunate to have lived with them while working at the Olympics in 2010 and Marlene would often join me throughout. We witnessed such a celebration of life, athletics, community and country, it was a testament to the power of the collective spirit. And Marlene would usually comment not on the most gifted athletes she saw or the crazy spectators but usually about a young man she witnessed on the street that was struggling to live a desperate life amongst all of the celebration and would be living there long after the Olympic flame went out.

I believe this speaks to her heart, in caring, in wanting to make a difference. I do believe that now she has passed, her work and legacy will continue as she has left an indelible imprint on all of us and her spirit will move forward with us all every day.

I am unable to be there as we have been gifted with a new life in our family. I believe that the many years of thoughts and prayers of all of our loved ones including Marlene, has brought – Brodie - into our lives, filled us with joy and we are truly blessed for that. Please know that I am with all you today in spirit.

Marlene will be missed as she was and always will be an important member of our family.

And now it is time for a run.

Love Maria,
David and Brodie
