Obituary for Randolph Rufus "Randy" Nicholson

Randolph Rufus "Randy"  Nicholson
Randolph Rufus “ Randy” Nicholson, 83, of Ithaca, Berbice, Guyana, passed away on October 6th, 2016 surrounded by his family.

The funeral service will be held on October 15th at St. John's Shaughnessy Church, 1490 Nanton Avenue, Vancouver BC. Visitation will be held at 9 am, with the service following at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Robinson Memorial Park Cemetery, 621 Robinson Street, Coquitlam BC at 1:30 pm.

Randy was born on October 19, 1932. He graduated from Queen’s College in Georgetown, Guyana, and then taught at Broad Street Government School. He then graduated from Teacher’s College in 1958. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Leeds in England, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He also studied at Oxford University. Upon returning to Guyana, he worked for the Department of Education and Teacher’s Training College as a physical education instructor.

Randy received a scholarship and emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta. He received a Masters Degree from the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Alberta. After graduation, he was the Director of the Edmonton Day Center for Youth Development. He went on to work as the Director of the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. Randy was fundamental in developing the program that allows for reciprocal health care services between provinces in Canada. Randy had a distinguished career in provincial health care for over 30 years.

Randy was married to Jean Olive (Matthias) on December 23, 1961; they spent 55 incredible years together filled with love and laughter. Randy is survived by his wife Jean, his two children, Leslie and Tracy, his five grandchildren, one great grandson, his sisters Ursula and Henrietta, his nieces and nephews and cousins; and a host of family and friends.Randy is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rebecca Nicholson, his brothers Lear, Ken and Desmond, as well as his son, Warren.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada, 2220 Eglington Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M4R 1K8.
