Obituary

Obituary for Rosemarie Lynne Cooper

On March 25, 2020 Rosemarie Cooper (nee Hopps) passed away at 64 after an incredibly brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rosemarie was born in Cardiff, Wales on October 17th 1955. At age 13, Rosemarie and her family moved to Canada. She was intelligent and gutsy, a brilliant student and debate champion and graduated from the University of New Brunswick planning to be an educator.

Rosemarie moved to British Columbia and met her soon-to-be husband - they started their relationship backpacking through South America. They started a family and while her marriage eventually ended they remained friends.

She was a selfless, generous, loving person and utterly open to all people and all experiences. She had a zest for life and her optimism and her positivity were infectious. She traveled whenever she could. She went Bungee jumping for the first time in her 60s. She found ways to accomplish what seemed impossible and she never seemed to tire.

When she got sick her hospital room was never empty - the people she had touched flooded towards her. Included in the condolences messages are so many similar themed comments - "she was there for me." And it was true - if you needed her she was there. She did not have much but would give it to you without hesitation.

She lived her last weeks how she spent her life – showing kindness to all she encountered, living life to the fullest, never complaining, and not burdening any of us with her worries about the future.

Rosemarie will be deeply missed by her five children (Matthew, Katy, Natasha, Robert and Cera), three grandchildren (Claire, Alec and Willa), mother (Marion Hopps), siblings and many, many friends. Rosemarie was predeceased by her father (John Hopps).

A celebration of life will be held in the future once we can all be together again. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Young People's Opera Society of BC.

It will be impossible to replace her but we all hope to be a bit better because of her.

Rosemarie was a shining light that energetically & lovingly planted seeds in her community and those around her then nurtured those seeds to fruition. She leaves a legacy of love, of song and of a more thriving community, as we at Young People’s Opera know. God bless this selfless lady and her family. She lives on through the blooms of her many friends and the people whose lives she affected! We shall dearly miss you Rosemarie but we should all wish to have made a mark on the world like you !! Love Lisa

I have thought long and hard about what I wanted to say about Rosemarie and I don't think any words I can post will ever adequately describe what a truly wonderful human being she was. She was one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever had the honour to know. She was a wonderful friend and I will feel her loss for a very long time.

We had many good times together and I had hoped we were going to have many more once she retired. She was such a joy to spend time with. I loved her sense of adventure and her never ending desire to learn. She always impressed me with her numerous accomplishments and many plans for the future. I couldn't believe how much energy she had.

She was always helping everyone; giving her time and talent to whatever project she threw herself into. The world is truly poorer for her passing and we were all richer for having known her.

My condolences to all of her family members. She always spoke very longingly and often about all of you. You are all in my thoughts.

I had the privilege of working with Rosemarie for many years. I always admired her generosity of spirit, joyfulness and positivity. She had such a big presence and an unlimited capacity and willingness to help others. Her compassion and patience was such an asset to our work. I hope that her children know the great contributions she made through her work and the example that she left for all her colleagues. We will miss her truly.

My condolences to the whole family, Rosemarie always had a smile on her face and could lighten up the room. Our families grew up together and spent many fond memories over the years. So sorry for your loss Matt, Katy and the rest of the family. Your mom was always so kind, friendly and loved her kids so much.
Love from the Andersons ( Don, Diane, Trevor and Kevin)
