Maarit was born on December 17th, 1957 in Elliot Lake Ontario to her loving parents Elias Rauhanen, and Raija Rauhanen (nee Jokinen). She was the middle child of five children; with both an older sister and brother, and a younger sister and brother.
Maarit's early years were spent in Finland after the family decided to return there before they immigrated back to Canada and came to live in BC in March of 1964. Here she completed her education, and met Don Ungless, the love of her life and the man she would come to marry on September 10, 1977.
In 1980, Maarit gave birth to the first of 4 children while she was working as a data entry clerk for CanFor. After her second son was born in 1984, she decided that she would stay at home with her children and run a daycare. In this way she was a second mom to many other children. During this time, in 1987 and then 1990, she gave birth to her third son, and finally the daughter that she and her husband had been hoping for.
In 1997, Maarit decided that she would return to work outside the home, and started working as a registered care aide at the Finnish Canadian Rest Home in Vancouver. Always a very kind, caring and generous woman, she was a favourite of many of the residents and staff. Her generous and giving nature also led her to help people wherever she could. After a coworker got involved with a pony rescue charity, Maarit, who was also an animal lover, was always quick to make donations and attend every fundraiser.
Maarit was also a lover of nature and the outdoors. She loved going for walks and hiking, and she especially loved spending time at the family cabin at Hawkins Lake, BC with her husband and children.
Maarit will be remembered as a devoted mother, a loving wife and a wonderful daughter, sister and friend that brought much love, light and warmth into so many lives. Her sudden passing on January 14th, 2016 has been a tragic shock to her family and friends, but she goes to join her father, Elias, whom she was very close to, in heaven. Rest in peace, Maarit.
