Our Mothers Were Friends

I first met Steve at Royal Roads in 1961 when I was a raw recruit and he, with one year under his belt, was a seasoned veteran who provided a lot of helpful advice. However, unknown to me at our first meeting was that Steve's Mother and my Mother had worked together as young women at the E.D. Smith's jam factory in Winona, Ontario. I had been at Roads for 3 months when out of the blue Steve came to my cabin one night and said 'I just got a letter from my mother and she has had a phone call from your mother. Apparently you have not contacted her since you arrived and she wants you to write her.' I had been way too scared and busy to write and it took Steve's admonishment via his mother to get me going. It was an odd way to begin my friendship with Steve.
