During the last lunch I had with James, we got to discussing some of his interesting experiences while Commander of a RCN submarine. He shared with me this gem from a mission in the Mediterranean Sea.
James: "We were prceeding slowly at 600ft following a Russian sub a couple of nautical miles ahead of us at 400 ft. We had good reason to believe we had not been detected. The 'phone on my desk rang. I picked it up not knowing who was calling."
Me: "You had telephone service 600 ft below the surface in the Mediterranean Sea?"
James: "It was an audio 'phone, using the water in place of a telephone line. Not a very good 'phone connection but good enough for two or three nautical miles. Anyways, the voice on the other end said in English with a heavy foreign accent: "Lieut-Commander Ferguson, this is Commander xxxxxx of the Russian Navy. How's Denise ?"
Me: "Denise?"
James: "Yes, I had a girlfriend named Denise at the time. I had to think fast to come up with a response. I came up with this: "You should know - you dated her last."
James then went on to explain that the USSR Commander of that Russian Sub was not only letting him know that he was very much aware of the sub following but that his Russian intelligence was far, far superior to that of the RCN. He even knew the name of James' current girlfriend!!
James agreed that his response left he and his Russian equivalent on an equal footing! That "social call" wasn't going anywhere, real quick.
Brilliant!
